Boy! I seem to be blabbin’ on about YouTube a lot recently… oh well.

Anyway I noticed on the YouTube Blog today that they have announced the addition of some new tools to their online video editing module.

Although the editor is very rudimentary as it is, it’s good to see they are at least keeping an eye to the future development of it.

The first of the new features is Image Stabilization.

Many people who have purchased video editing software in the past have been swayed by the inclusion of this feature in the software they chose. Probably just as many were seriously disappointed with the results when they finally used it!

Stabilization in any form, other than in editors that cost thousands of dollars, can only do so much to compensate for camera shake and often this is at the expense of picture quality.

YouTube have posted a “side by side” comparison of the footage where they have used the stabilization feature and although their example looks pretty good I would still be a little doubtful about results for the average user.

A great deal of how effective it actually is would depend on the video file format of the file that was originally uploaded.

Having said that the examples below are pretty good.

The second feature they released is a 3D Video creation tool that can take footage that you captured using two cameras set apart slightly. The tool itself can sync the two streams together into a 3D stream for editing which is kind of handy.

Just spotted this press press release from Avid Technology the makers of Pinnacle Studio and the very…very! upmarket Avid range of pro video editing software and tools.

Remember, it is a press release so read through the cheesy language! It seems to indicate that the software will only handle .mov files but I haven’t had a chance to check it out for myself.
