Well it’s that time of the year again when all the big players have finished releasing the latest versions of their particular video editing software.

So there is only one thing left to do really… have a sale!

Generally from this point in the year through to Christmas is the best time to be buying most software as the competition for your hard earned bucks heats up.

So the first cab off the rank in this year’s silly season is Corel.

Of course my interest is in VideoStudio Pro X4 because at around $50.00 we are talking about a seriously good deal.

The page Corel has set up for their current deals also shows all of Corel’s other current discounts so before you head off to take a look there are a couple of things I want to point out about the products on offer.

VideoStudio Pro X4

This is my #2 choice for consumer level video editing software. It gets beaten out by Cyberlink and for all the details on why you can click on the sidebar menu to see the reviews and comparisons.

However just because it is #2 doesn’t mean it is an inferior product, quite the opposite actually. It is a very good video editor that would serve the majority of people very well.

Note that on the Corel discounts page VideoStudio is listed twice. The one higher on the page and in the right hand column is the standard version for around $50.00. The FAR better deal is further down the page to the left.

This is the VideoStudio Pro X4 Ultimate version and for only $10.00 more represents much better value.

The only other deal on that page I think is worth looking at is the Photo and Video Bundle. For around $100.00 you get VideoStudio Pro X4 Ultimate and PaintShop Pro X4 Ultimate.

Apart from being a good deal you can be pretty sure that armed with both of these programs you would have all of your video and still image requirements totally handled.

As far as all the other stuff on the page goes I can’t really say much as they are not items of software that I have much experience with.

Ok so this is what I expected when I saw the announcement on the release of CyberLink PowerDirector 10.

I expected CyberLink to have sat back for a year and taken it easy knowing they had done better than everyone else with PowerDirector 9.

I expected PowerDirector 10 to be a cosmetic tart up of the existing program to make it look a) pretty and b) different enough from PD 9 to qualify as a “new” version.

Cynical aren’t I?

So with a resigned sigh I downloaded a copy of the new version and installed it. It was at that exact moment that I suddenly sat up a took a little notice of what was going on.

Video editing software programs are pretty big these days. In order to make them more manageable for downloading they are very heavily compressed. So the first step of the installation is to inflate those compressed files.

This usually takes a bit of time to accomplish… well not so with PowerDirector 10! It took seconds.

The next step is to actually get the installation process going.

Usually this is the time where you go make your beverage of choice and maybe read the newspaper or, sit there blankly watching the progress indicator crawl at a snail’s pace across the screen… again… not so with PowerDirector 10.

I was registered and open for business inside a couple of minutes.

To cut a long story short I was totally wrong about my predictions as far as PowerDirector 10 went.

CyberLink have made almost no cosmetic changes to the software but the changes they have made under the hood are astounding.

If you thought PD 9 was fast wait until you get a load of PowerDirector 10, it goes like a rocket!

They have added a bunch of useful and practical new features and well I could just go on and on.

Did I mention it goes really fast?

Well this just has to be my favorite time of the year!

Christmas… no! Easter… no! Any kind of excuse for a holiday… no!

It is of course that time of the year when muvee release a new version of their kinda semi-automatic home movie making software, Reveal.

Of course I can hear you asking yourselves, “Why is that such a big deal?” (Really, I can hear that… in my head.)

Well you see the bestest part of muvee (don’tcha think they would just get over the lowercase “m” and call it Muvee for goodness sakes?!) releasing a new version of anything is that the delectable Lindsay from the muvee PR department contacts me.

Here is a picture of Lindsay and no, it was not taken by me from the bushes in front of her house… I was actually in the bushes of the house across the street using a telephoto and remember, it’s not stalking if it’s love! And yes, meeting at the local courthouse for a hearing regarding the issuing of a restraining order DOES count as a date!

Anyway, easily the most fun part is that Lindsay sweats bullets every time I do this because there is no telling what I will write about their software or if I will even mention the software at all!

muvee Reveal X Review

I don’t want to give too much away here and spoil the surprise but new muvee Reveal X has far more X than any of the other video editing software with X… say no more.

I wanted take a little time on this post just to make sure I explain myself fully.

For the month of July Corel are offering their top level video editing software, VideoStudio Pro X4 at a 50% discount.

Normally I would slap this kind of information up on the site, spread it around and go have a coffee but on this one I think a little more needs to be said.

First of all this is an incredible discount on a very, very good consumer level video editor.

VideoStudio Pro is a matured and stable product and is state of the art as far as this level of product goes. I have absolutely no concerns about recommending it.

What makes this deal particularly attractive is that it is good for the entire month of July so there is plenty of time for you to download a trial copy and make sure that the program runs well on your computer and plays nice with the types of files you will be dealing with.

Very often these types of “hit and run” discounts are valid for very short time periods and the marketing behind that is to create a sense of scarcity, the feeling that you are going to miss out.

The logic is that this created scarcity will cause you to impulsively buy something that you would otherwise hold off on or wait to do more research.

Corel should really be congratulated for this approach in giving you the potential customer time to evaluate their product.

This is clearly indicative of two major shifts in the “mindset” (oh God! I used the “mindset” word) at Corel over the past few years.

First it shows they truly have changed their perception of their relationship with their customers. They have become far more involved with their existing customer base and far more receptive to their needs.

The second point this raises is that they have (quite rightly) a great deal of faith in the quality and performance of their product.

They are literally saying, “Hey, here’s the product, here’s a huge discount and while we are at it, here’s a bunch of time for you to evaluate the product before you decide.”

On my video editing software review site I have Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 ranked at number 2 for the best consumer level video editing software.

It is not at number 2 for any particularly bad reason, in fact the only reason is that its audio controls are not quite as good as the number 1 choice and that’s it.

If you are in the market for one of the best video editing software packages around at the moment then now is a great time to get on board with VideoStudio.

Normally it comes in at around the $100 mark as is usual for this level of editor but right now you can pick it up for about $50 which is a killer deal.
