DivX have just started promoting their wacky crazy mid-year summer sale! Holy crap I just gotta get me some of that DivX stuff now!
Ok I couldn’t resist taking the piss out of them for the way they made the announcement. Seems like DivX took a page out of the WalMart playbook of discount copy-writing. On the other hand I was a little disappointed not to see things like:
“Crazy Rock Bottom Prices”
“We Have Gone Completely Mad”
“Out They Go” and : “You Will Never See Prices Like this Again!”
Anyhoo, the bottom line here is that DivX is actually one of the best deployments of MP4/H.264 compression around today. It can achieve amazing quality retention whilst compressing files down to tiny sizes in standard and high definition format.
If you already have video editing software it will most likely be able to achieve similar compression to DivX but I very much doubt it can do it as well. Think of it this way. You received a VW Bug with the software and it gets you from A to B. DivX is like a Ferrari that you pay for as an extra!
For most people I wouldn’t really recommend DivX as a vital add-on to begin with as you folks have more important things to get into but at 50% off it starts to look pretty attractive.
