Hi Larry,
I found years ago that trying to keep up with the latest and greatest in Camcorders was a full-time job and one I didn't want! So to combat this I devised a sneaky system for finding a good camcorder regardless of when I was doing it. Follow this link for my patented (ok, it's not patented) foolproof camcorder selection method: http://www.video-editing-software-tips.com/469/how-to-choose-the-best-camcorder/

Depending on how "pro" you want to get I currently think that the top of the list here is the best for consumer through to prosumer: http://www.myeasydata.com/video-editing-software.html

I am a marketing communications professional considering a side venture in video production for businesses and non-profit organizations that need promotional and educational videos. I am pretty computer savvy and run Windows Vista (64 bit) on a Toshiba laptop. I have no experience in video editing but lots of time to learn. What video camera and video editing software would you recommend? Thanks.

I must admit that when I first heard about the upscaling feature from Arcsoft I was pretty skeptical. Yeah. yeah, more "bells and whistles" to distract the masses!
However when I took a look at the results I too was pretty impressed.

More recently Cyberlink have incorporated this technology into their PowerDirector 8 program as a standard feature and after having used it on some old SD dv-avi files I am a believer.

The key to this is that the processing power required to achieve the results is enormous so the technology is only available if you have a reasonably modern CPU and video card.

I am looking to replace Pinical Studio 9 as it no longer works with Windows 7 64 bit.

DO any of the current Editing SW do upscaling, I looked at you link for the latest player upscaling and the quality of the pictue comparison (based on youtube) was stunning,

I have a lot of Hi8 video I'd love to "improve" the quality, colour and sharpness during edit?
